Why is west Bengal is called west Bengal even though it is in eastern India?

This is because when India was divided after independence, the province of Bengal (which included present-day West Bengal and Bangladesh) was divided into East Bengal (present day Bangladesh) and West Bengal. Later, East Bengal was renamed to Bangladesh as a separate country.
