why is west bengal named west bengal if it is in the east

when india attained freedom in 1947,bengal was partitioned on the basis of religion. the western part of Bengal went to Indian subcontinent and the eastern part( present day Bangladesh) formed a different nation

so we called it east Bengal because earth is devided into 2 parts north south and 4 directions east west north south okkk.
