White phosphorus is less stable because of angular strain .

The P4 molecule has the angle only of 60° due to which angular strain increases and the molecule becomes destabilized.

This is due to polymeric structure of red phosphorus or angular strain in P4 molecule of white phosphorus where the angle is only 60°.
