Wool is a great insulator. It is warm in winter and cool in summer (think vacuum flask). This is because of all the "waves" in the fibre, which lock in air. It may seem strange to us to use wool in the summer, but many Bedouins and Tuaregs use wool to keep the heat out!

The structure of the wool fiber cause thousands of tiny air pocket to from wool fabric. in cold weather these trap body heat like a thick blanket does. However, those same air pocket that air can flow through the fiber allow the body to cool itself through the evaporation of sweat.
