Zinc dust is used in ozonolysis to prevent the further oxidation of the compound.
Zn prevents the compound from further making more bonds with oxygen and thus Stops the reaction process there.

Zinc dust is used in ozonolysis because of the following reasons:

  • Zinc dust is a reducing agent.
  • The zinc dust in the ozonolysis prevents the far oxidation of the products formed.
  • Zinc dust prevents the making of further oxygen bonds.
  • Zinc oxide helps in making Carbonyl compounds from Ozonide.
  • The reaction of ozonolysis is incomplete in the absence of Zinc Dust.
  • Zinc dust is also helpful in preventing corrosion.

Hence, due to these reasons, zinc dust is used in ozonolysis.
