Daylight Saving Time (DST) Not Observed in Year 2019. India currently observes India Standard Time (IST) all year. Daylight Saving Time has not been used since our records start, in 1970. DST data from before 1970 is not available for India.

Yes, we really need a different Time Zone for North-East Indian states. A time zone which should be an hour ahead of the rest of India, i.e. GMT+6:30. Currently the entire India follows GMT+5:30 timezone, which is not at all efficient for a country that extends 2933 km from east to west.

Explanation:

  • The Indian landmass is positioned in the tropics of the cancer that passes through it. Thus It's neither too close or too far from the equator and as the length of the day varies from the 11.5 to 13 hrs in a year.
  • Some of the places that are located in the southern parts of the country get more of the sunshine and thus India has got lots of opportunities to use the extra sun's daylight in the summers.
  • As the time zones are determined by the longitudes for the example of Chennai and the Calcutta is on the 88° E longitudes there is need to have the different time zones rather than the daylight savings.
  • Having the separate zones will leads to the better use the electricity and more will be economical to use and best applies to the agrarian economies of the time zone.
