Why isn't hydrated AlCl3 used as a catalyst? Why does it have to be strictly anhydrous?
Thanks

Answer: Anhydrous AlCl₃ is used as catalyst because anhydrous AlCl₃ forms covalent bond and takes Cl from the benzene.
If we take Hydrous AlCl₃ then it forms ionic bond due to high heat from hydration and gets distributed into Al³⁺ and Cl⁻.
