Because certain atoms have the same number of protons but the number of neutrons differ for which the sum of the protons and neutrons i.e. the mass number differs

Because different isotopes have different numbers of neutron, they do not all weigh the same or have the same mass.
Different isotopes of the same element have the same atomic number.
