When a car stops suddenly, the seat belts worn by the passenger of the car prevent them from falling forward.
This enables the momentum of the passenger to be reduced to zero in a long time intervals.
In other words, the rate of changes of momentum is a small.
So, the impact force is a small which prevents injury.
