Why it is advised to add acid to water and not water to acid

It's advised to add acid to water rather than water to acid is because when water is added to acid there a chemical reaction takes place which can give out harmful gases and have a chemical reaction taking place which can even burn our hands. Adding water to acid doesn't have any such problem.
