It is better to use compost instead of fertilizers because compost is is organic and it does not harm the soil whereas excess use of fertilizers har the soil. Compost enhances the soil to create a beneficial environment for plants whereas fertilizers do not. The biggest difference is compost is decayed organic matter i.e. it is prepared by decomposition of leftover food decayed leaves deceased any plant material and so it doesn't harm the soil where as fertilizers are prepared in factories by chemicals and it harm the soil if used excessively.
