Why it is CaC2 and not Ca2C?

In calcium carbide the carbide ion is an acetylide ion in which two carbon atom are joined by a triple bond and therefore two valencies are left vacant these two valencies combine with the divalent calcium to form cac2 and ca atom is having double positive change.
