the 1970s, an organized resistance to the destruction of forests spread throughout India and came to be known as theChipko movement. The name of the movement comes from the word 'embrace', as the villagers hugged the trees, and prevented the contractors' from felling them

Answer:

In the year 1970, a non violent movement was conducted at Uttar Pradesh whose main aim was to save trees in the forests from destruction.

To save the city from deforestation and spread social awareness, the villagers took the initiative of hugging the trees, or sticking by the side of the tree which was also known as "embracing" , so that the wood cutters refrain from cutting down the trees.
