Because there are two halves in one! Doing the math, 1 divided by 1/2 = 1 times 2 over 1 which = 2. 1/2 goes into 1 two times. When dividing fractions you flip the fraction you are dividing by over so that the denominator is on top and the numerator is at the bottom, and then you straight multiply.
