It is easier to hammer a sharp nail into wood than a blunt one because pressure is indirectly proportional to area ( PRESSURE = THRUST / AREA ) i.e. an increase in area will cause a decrease in pressure and a decrease in area will cause an increase in pressure. So , as the nail is sharp , more pressure is applied to the peace of wood whereas if the same is done with a blunt one , it won't get into the piece as the area of the blunt nail is more than the area of a sharp one.
