Why it is easier to swim in the sea than in river?

Answer:

Sea water contains dissolved salts and minerals, due to which its density is higher as compared to the river water. Now, upthrust due to a liquid is directly proportional to its density.

So, sea water exerts greater upward force (upthurst) on the swimmer as a smaller portion submerged in sea water displaces water equal to the total weight of the body while to displace same amount of river water a larger portion of body will have to be submerged , hence swimming is easier in sea water.
