Establish Community Partnerships—We have several community partnerships that help our school assist students and their families. A local food bank provides food for our school pantry. One local church provides Blessings in a Backpack, which includes food for the weekend, whole others provide book bags, shoes, socks, underwear, coats, clothes, household items, and gift cards. In addition, the state health department provides dental screenings and flu mists, the local library provides family activities and learning events, and the Community Action Agency provides assistance with utility bills.Build Character—This year we incorporated Rachel’s Challenge into our character education lessons. In addition to focusing on being responsible, respectful, encouraging, and cooperative, we teach resiliency, kindness, compassion, and perseverance, and we celebrate acts of kindness. We also recognize academic achievement, positive behavior, perfect attendance, and academic growth.Use Language of Possibility—Our staff participated in a professional development session focused on the work of Peter Johnston’s book Opening Minds. The book describes how we can use language that moves students forward in all their aspirations.Provide Counseling Services—Our mental health counselors, behavior specialists, social worker, and school counselors work with students and their families on a regular basis.Build Parent Capacity—We educate parents on how to work with their children at home and provide materials like books, flashcards, journals, and other items that parents request.Maximize Learning Time—Our school-improvement team and grade-level teams regularly review data to form instruction and the daily intervention block. Teachers at various grade levels are implementing Lucy Calkin’s reading and writing workshops to provide more time for students to read and write at school and help build their stamina. Students monitor their reading and math levels with data displays and set personal academic goals. We also have a partnership with Young Audiences that allows artists to coteach with our teachers and integrate dance, theater, music, and other art forms into various content areas to appeal to different learning styles.
