Population control and sustainability is vital in the health of a country’s economy and well being. Workers are needed to maintain its infrastructure and services. Thus, the population must be maintained at a happy medium. This is accomplished by encouraging births or immigration. Conversely, overpopulation presents problems as well. A country cannot support the needs of its people if there are too many. Poverty becomes rampant because there are not enough jobs for everyone and human services suffer. Higher death rates appear. People resort to crime to survive promoting civil unrest.
Another issue appears if the population demographics such as gender, income rate and racial groups are not maintained properly. For example, someone mentioned China. China fits this problem because gender is an issue as well as population. The Chinese limit of 1 kid per couple to qualify for state benefits intrinsically creates a bias for male offspring over females because of the belief that males are more productive and better earners. Eventually if this is not corrected, males will greatly outnumber females in China and possibly create an increase in homosexual males. Not that there is anything wrong with gay males, but two married males don’t make a baby without a female unless a female is willing to be an in-vitro surrogate. There are plenty sperm banks, but you still need a females womb. I discussed this problem with male Chinese national Quora writers. The gist of their answers were that they could import females of other asian ethnics or westerners to fill in the gap. However, whether it makes a difference or not, they would not be Chinese.
There are many pros and cons to this discussion. Thomas Robert Malthus - Wikipedia saw overpopulation as the demise of humankind. He thought that the world could not support the billions of humans we have in todays world and predicted mass destruction and doom for near future humans of his time. What he did not take into account was that the more people you had, the more minds you also had for invention and innovation in agriculture and GMO’s that have increased crop yields beyond his imagination. If fact, there is more food produced today for the worlds population than ever before. Does that mean starvation has been eradicated? No. There will always be people left out either by where they live because of climate, drought and political greed.
Lastly, I believe not enough credit is given to human invention and ingenuity when humans are pressed to survive.
