Pulwama attacks. Balakot air strikes. Surgical strikes. Kerala floods. Corruption. Grinding poverty. Everyday struggles. Well, where is my dear country headed?
We citizens seem to be happy to love our nation in instalments- on Republic Day or on Independence Day, flying flags and making ‘tricolour sandwiches’. And on an average day? We choose to oppose national anthems being played in theatres and are busy in sending our children to foreign lands to earn. What do we care about our own heritage and culture? Bharatanatyam and Ayurveda are for the foreigners, while Halloween celebrations are for us! I think there is something fundamentally wrong with our perceptions.
India’s glorious past and a highly potent future:
In my opinion, what India is going through presently can be termed as an ‘identity crisis’- a situation where you question your core values and identities as a nation. This is a time where we are facing general hopelessness, low self-esteem and self-confidence which has its roots as deep as the British era. It seems like we have quite not been able to handle this ‘new label’ of ‘underdeveloped’ and ‘poor nation’ that has been imposed upon us by our invaders. For, our ancestors never knew how it felt to be ‘intellectually inferior’ or ‘poor’. They were completely enlightened souls with remarkable scientific knowledge and abundant wealth.
After all, this is the land that gave birth to Brahmagupta (the first scholar to treat zero as an independent number), Varahamihira (writer of the book Pancha-Siddhanta, an important book in astronomy), Acharya Patanjali (the founder of Yoga), Baudhyana (the original formulator of Pythagoras Theorem), Charaka (the founder of Ayurveda) and the like.
More recently also, we have had an excellent set of achievers like Vishwesvaraya (engineering pioneer), Sir C V Raman (Winner of the Nobel Physics Prize 1930) Dr Homi Bhabha (founder of Indian Department of Atomic Energy) and even Vikram Sarabhai (the glorious founder of ISRO) to name a few.
India has always been incredible in its greatness in the past. And I am confident that the future too is bound to be even brighter. Just that we need more ‘self-realized’ youth who are ready to say no to brain drain, mindless westernization and urbanization. India too needs her revolution to realize her full potentials and take charge of her destiny!
