Why it is instructed not smell the gas coming out during the heating of ferrous su crystal?

Answer:

Heating of FeSO4 crystal, results in evolution of SO2 and SO3 gas. If anyone inhale them, they may sense burning sensation in respiratory tract. Thus it is advised to not inhale them.

2FeSO4 --- Fe2O3 + SO2 + SO3
