Why it is necessary to calculate the e/m ratio.of the sub atomic particles.???

Sub atomic particles are so small that u can't even see them with any microscope even we can not see atom so to differentiate them without knowing their properties we needed some numerical value so J.J. Thomson invented first e/m ratio for electron.
