Irrigation- it is the artificial application of water to the land or soil. It is used to assist in growing of agricultural crops in dry areas and during seasons of inadequate rainfall.
India's land area under cultivation is practically fixed (around 140 million hectares) out of which only a little less than 40% is irrigated even today. Apart from riverine planes and coastal regions, plateau regions such as Deccan plateau have low level of irrigation.
A well developed system of irrigation not only increases the yield, but it also helps in cultivating multiple crops at same piece of land in a year. Thus, increasing the overall productivity of agriculture sector. And a well developed irrigation system also prevents wastage of water.
