Why it is not sure about viruses whether they are alive or not ?

because when they are in the nature that means when they are not inside any cell the cannot do any kind of activity. so out of the cell a virus cannot be detected.so.we call it dead

but when it is in the cell we are able to see its activities.then we can call it alive.
