We can think of Raja Ravi Varma's paintings as national because of the following reasons:

(i) Raja Ravi Varma was one of the first artists who tired to create a style that was both modern and national.

(ii) He mastered the western art of oil painting and realistic life study, but painted themes from Indian mythology.

hope it helps

Raja Ravi Verma 's painting were made using western methods like oil paintings but he use to paint scenes from mahabharat and ramayana. As his paintings used to have both Indian and western ailments. Hence, they were called national paintings.
