The earth is a fairly huge neutrally charged mass. This means that it can be considered as an object with constant potential. This is why we usually refer to ground potential as 0 Volts. This is merely a reference potential we have chosen. The fact that the earth is huge, and it is electrically neutral, means that it can be considered an almost infinite supply of electrons. No matter how many electrons we take from the earth, it always remains electrostatically neutral due to its sheer size. This is why the earth always acts as a sink for current to flow towards.

No matter the magnitude of the current, the earth will always be able to supply enough electrons to match it.
