why it is said ' the entry of US into the Vietnam war'? was any war was going on before there arrival? ( nationalism in indo china)

the entry of US into the war proved to be fatal for both, the Americans as well as the vietnamese . the war grew out of a fear among US policy planners that the victory of the ho chi Minh government.
