focal length if a concave mirror is always negative while focal length of convex is always positive.

It is written as -30 because it is a object distance u which is always negative.

Answer:

Because we measure the distance from lens and in the direction of light.

The object is placed in front of lens and it is not in the direction of light .

We see that in which direction the light is going by seeing the reflecting surface of mirror or lens the light comes from the direction where the mirror or lens faces and passes the lens or mirror so the things which are behind the lens or mirror are in the direction of light

Hope it helped you
