Why it is that to smell cold food, we have to go close but smell of hot food reaches us several metres away?

‘Hot food’ reaches us ‘several meters’ away due to the temperature diffused to high to low.

  • Due to diffusion property of matter smell of “hot sizzling” food several meters. Diffusion is the intermixing of “two different types of matter” their own.  
  • The diffusion of matter increases the increase the temperature. The diffusion rate of matter becomes faster and the smell of “hot sizzling food” reaches us ‘several meters’ away.
  • The rate of diffuse is slower at low temperature hence, the smell of cold food reaches slowly.

When food is hot, diffusion is more. But in cold food diffusion is slow. Hence to get the smell from cold food we have to go close.
