It's not necessarily incorrect.
It depends o the conditions.
It applies when there is a resistance to that motion, as in a car, which needs continuous force to prevent it slowing down due to wind resistance and gravity.
If there is no resistance,as in space,the object will not maintain it's speed but accelerate under continuous force.
