Absenteeism of students is one of the major problems facing the K12 segment in our country today. According to a study by the International Journal of Pediatric Research, in rural India, an average of 4.73-17.84% of students are absent almost every day, either chronically or occasionally.
The factor contributing the most to absenteeism is physical ailments, followed by other factors such as family problems leading to early school withdrawal, school load/phobia, or delinquency.
The study clearly shows that more students failed among absentees (17.39%) when compared to non-absentees (0.95%), which is too big a figure to be just a coincidence.

Noted academicians such as CJ Chung, Professor at Lawrence Technology University, have argued that there are students who do attend classes regularly and are still struggling, just as there are students who regularly miss class and still succeed.’

Students who attend school regularly also feel more connected to their community, develop important social skills and friendships, which are good for their mental health, and consequently sets them up for a strong and successful future.

Secondly, teachers should keep track of the attendance of their students, to identify the reasons behind the absenteeism and seek solutions for them with the help of counselling.
They should also maintain steady communication with parents to mitigate behavioural problems related to school workload, peer pressure, bullying etc.
