Jamtara is a newly formed district of Jharkhand State. It came into existence on 26th April 2001 . The small district of Jharkhand state comprises of only 4 blocks .
In mineral rich Jharkhand, this is one of the districts with no minerals.
60-70% of the population of Jamtara district were in the BPL category in 2004–2005, being in the same category as Ranchi and Dumka districts.[12] Rural poverty in Jharkhand declined from 66% in 1993–94 to 46% in 2004–05. In 2011, it has come down to 39.1%.
