Why junk food is not banned

Because we all should have a choice. However it should be completely transparent what is IN that food, how it is made, and junk food companies should be banned from marketing it towards children or claiming in any way that it's  a healthy or (less unhealthy) choice.

For many people, junk food can be a lifesaver. An example is someone with cystic fibrosis who struggles to digest food - they turn to junk food often to try and get the amount of calories and fat that they need to just stay alive. Someone on the streets might turn to junk food as a way to get cheap calories when healthier food will just not do the trick. The calories in an apple for $2 will not keep you warm or last the night - the calories from a $2 bucket of hot chips will.

I think a better system than taxing or banning junk food is MAKING HEALTHY FOOD CHEAPER. This makes it more attractive and more accessible ;) it promotes choice, rather than making people feel controlled or deprived.

Because junk food becomes a problem only when people eat too much of it. Just think of alcohol: a glass of wine during the meal and two bottles of vodka guzzled down in less than 30 minutes are not the same thing. Most people dink that glass of wine or a beer while having the meal and get absolutely zero problems with it. In exactly the same way people will have one candy, or eat a burger once every few weeks with no consequences
