One of the main reasons behind this downward trend in jute production is the failure to pay the farmers their due. Media reports suggest that farmers are losing interest in cultivating jute as they rarely get expected price for their produce.

Some of the problems are high cost of production, storage of raw jute & power supply, loss of foreign market, emergence of substitute goods against gunny bags and loss of demand for jute goods both at home and abroad, lack of modernization etc.

There is a decrease in demand for jute owing to the Government of India: The jute mills often failing to supply bags to sugar mills on time, As a result, jute mills in India are not getting orders from sugar mills and the demand for jute has dropped. The Government had increased the Minimum Support Price for Jute
