The freezing point of a liquid depresses on the addition of a non-volatile solute, and therefore, a solution of sodium chloride freezes at a temperature lower than the freezing point of water. On the other hand, there is elevation of boiling point on the addition of a non-volatile solute and consequently the boiling point of sodium chloride solution is more then that of water.
