France's treasury in the years immediately before the French Revolution was almost empty, and King Louis XVI was trying to remedy the kingdom's fiscal problems by raising taxes.

LOUIS 16 INCREASED THE TAX BECAUSE:
1. LONG YEARS OF WAR DRAINED THEIR FINANCIAL RESOURCES IN FRANCE.
2. THE COST OF MAINTAINING AN EXTRAVAGANT COURT IN THE IMMENSE PALACE OF VERSAILLES.
3. FRANCE ALSO HELPED THE 13 AMERICAN COLONIES TO GET THEIR INDEPENDENCE FROM THE COLONIAL GOVT.( BRITAIN)
4. THE WAR ADDED MORE THAN 1 BILLION LIVRES TO A DEBT THAT HAD ALREADY RISEN UP TO 2 BILLION LIVRES.
5. LENDERS WHO GAVE THE STATE CREDIT ALSO INCREASED THE INTEREST UPTO 10 PERCENTAGE.
6. AND TO MEET THEIR REGULAR EXPENSES SUCH AS MAINTAINING THE ARMY, RUN GOVT OFFICES ETC.
7. SO LOUIS 16 AND HIS GOVT WERE FORCED TO INCREASE THE TAX;.
