Kolkatta receives rainfall of 160 to 200 cm a year, Lucknow gets 100 to 120cm only. The southwest monsoon arrives in two branches: the Bay of Bengal branch and the Arabian Sea branch. The Bay of Bengal branch, which initially tracks the Coromandal Coast northeast from Cape Comorin to Orissa, swerves to the northwest towards the Indo-Gangetic Plain and hits Kolkatta. The waterladen clouds become weak as they proceed north west while the Arabian Sea branch moves northeast towards the Himalayas. The clouds get drifted towards Assam and give scanty rain over Lucknow .

Kolkata receives heavier rain than Lucknow because of the reason behind the closeness of Bay of Bengal.

There is much difference between the rain received by Kolkata and Lucknow. Kolkata receives rainfall of 160 to 200 cm a year and on the other side, Lucknow receives 100 to 120 cm only.

The Southwest monsoon winds bring heavy rainfall in Kolkata which is located on the eastern coast. On the contrary, Lucknow has continental type climate and North East Monsoon winds reach late in this area. Thus Lucknow receives less rainfall than Kolkata.
