Water does not burn in air taking in oxygen and forming another compound.

carbon, oil,  sulphur, nitrogen  , hydrogen, etc. burn in oxygen to form oxides giving out heat energy and light energy (due to high temperature and due to conversion of energy into light.

Siddharth11: tell me in more detail
kvnmurty: when things burn, there is a chemical reaction taking place. But water when it is burnt/heated, it turns into vapour (invisible). It does not give back any light or heat..
kvnmurty: but carbon, wood etc. they are inflamable.. they catch fire, they burn with oxygen. There is a chemical reaction taking place. This chemical reaction results in the emission of light energy and heat energy.
Siddharth11: why some objects are inflammable
Siddharth11: why some objects emit light after burning
kvnmurty: you need to know electrons structure in atoms... 11th 12th standard chemistry
kvnmurty: Exothermic reactions. Energy gaps in atoms related to electron states. Electron excitation.
