Even roots need oxygen to perform respiration. Water logged of land plants roots do not allow diffusion of oxygen to take place between the soil and root nodes and as a result, the plant may die.

As we know that amount of Soil water is inversely proportional to amount of Soil air so as Soil water increase in water logged condition, soil air become less the plant dies.
