The small intestine's primary function is the absorption of nutrients from chyme (the liquid 'soup' made up of food and secretions from the stomach, liver, and the intestinal wall) so maximizing the exposed surface area is vital and this is why the calibre is small and is lined with millions of microscopic finger-like projections (villi & microvilli).  If it were larger then these projections wouldn't get access to the nutrients in the fluid flowing right in the middle of intestine.

The large intestine's main function, on the other hand, is to absorb excess water from the bowel content in order to solidify and store the forming stool.  Therefore it has a large capacity and distensibility.........i hope it will help u

the main function of small intestine is to digest and then absorbed the digested food

for this function small intestine is very very adapted such as large surface area and presence of villi to increase the absorption

on other hand the function of the large intestine is to absorb the water and it is only absorbed by large diameter so this large diameter helps to larger absorption of water molecules
this is the answer of your question
