Because before seeing Helen she thought that his husband was secretly meeting with a lady and he has a affair with her.But she came to know to that she is a ghost thats why she was relived

Because she thought that the ghost was Helen of Troy whom John had called to help in writing story(As Lavinia too bought the board for same purpose)
