However, recombinations are due to the crossing over that takes place during meiosis. Therefore, the law of independent assortment is applicableonly for the traits which are located on different chromosomes. Thus, law of independent assortment is not universally applicable.

  • It states that each pair of alleles separate independently of each other pair of alleles during gamete formation.

◆ Law of independent assortment is not universally applicable because -

  • It is applicable only when traits are located on different chromosomes.
  • It is not applicable if pairs of alleles are located on same chromosome.
  • Hence, law of independent assortment is not universally applicable.
