The young Charles-Edouard studied at La Chaux-de-Fonds' School of Art in 1900 to become a watch engraver. He took a decorative arts course at the same school in 1904 and became interested in architecture. His first architectural project was a villa in his hometown, designed and built in 1905 in collaboration with a local architect.
