Lead acetate paper turns black when it comes in contact with H_2S gas due to the formation of compound called lead sulfide.

  • Lead acetate (Pb(CH_3COO)_2)is a white crystalline substance with a sweetish taste and is highly dis solvable in water and glycerine.
  • It is utilized to identify the presence of H_2S (hydrogen sulfide).
  • When lead acetate is introduced in the environment where hydrogen sulfide gas is present, a black color precipitate is formed due to the formation of lead sulfide as shown in the following chemical reaction:

  • Pb(CH_3COO)_2+H_2S \rightarrow PbS + 2 CH_3COOH_2
