Length is called a fundamental quantity because the length of an object does not change. The fundamental quantities are the quantities of objects.

That physical quantity which depends on other quantity/which are derived from base quantity.

The area is derived quantity because it is derived from two base quantities.

Length is a fundemantal quantity as we cannot derive the said through formula , but we can easily derive area through the formula ( length × breadth ) in case of a rectangle etc. Therefore length is a fundemantal quantity but area is a derived quantity.
