There are various reasons for poverty in India these are as follows:

1. The economic development was very low under the British administration. The British policies destroy the traditional Indian Handicrafts and hampered the growth of industries like textile. This eliminated the source of income for large segment of India's population. Even after 70 years of independent India we can find a major section of the poor people engaged in handicraft industries are downtrodden.

2. Green revolution created many job opportunities in the agriculture sector however its effects were confined to Limited parts of India.

3. India Is very backward from the industrial point of view. Hardly 3% of the total working population is engaged in the large scale industry.

4. There has been huge inequality in distribution of income in the country. This is mainly because of unequal distribution of land and other resources.

5. Lack of land resources and indebtedness had aggravated to the cause of poverty.

6. Upward trend in prices adversely affect the poor section of the society.

7. Due to lack of job opportunities more than 90 lakhs of our total working people is unemployed.
