Lichens are sensitive to atmospheric pollution such as nitrogen (N) because they receive all their nutrients and water from wet and dry atmospheric deposition (fall out). Nitrogen deposition can increase the load of nutrients.

Lichens are sensitive to sulphur dioxide (SO2) and do not grow in polluted areas.
If air is very badly polluted with SO2 there may be no lichens present , just green algae may be found.
Their presence indicates absence of pollution amd their absence indicates presence of pollution in that area.
Therefore, lichens are called indicator of air pollution.
