Light is seen before we hear thunder during lightning because the speed of light is faster than the speed of sound.

It is because light has a greater speed in air than the sound.... Light can travel at about 3 lakh metres per second while the speed of sound ia just 343 metre per second at 20 degree celsius in air......

Deepmallya: Light travels at about 300 million metres per second, so you effectively see the flash instantly. Sound travels at more like 340 metres per second, so it can take many seconds for the sound to reach you.
You can divide the number of seconds between the two by 3 to get the approximate distance of the lightning from you in kilometres.
