alcium hydroxide is completely soluble in water, which gives the solution a clear appearance. On bubbling in carbon dioxide, the solution reacts to produce calcium carbonate and water. Calcium carbonate is insoluble in water and precipitates as tiny white particles. This can make the mixture cloudy, or 'milky'.
