An electric current is the net movement of charge when an electric potential (voltage) is applied, whether electrons in a metal or ions in a solution. Pure ammonia (NH3) has almost no charge carriers, but if ammonium chloride NH4+ Cl- is added, then there are the ions NH4+ and Cl- that can move in an electric field. If the ions can move under an electric field, then there is electrical conductivity.
