Why did the makers of the Indian Constitution introduced federalism in India?

India is known for its diversity. Across the country's length and breadth, there are many regions with their own cultures. Federalism helps these regions to cater the needs of their cultures. A single tier all powerful government at the Union level may not be able to address regional issues well.

From the administration point of view, division of responsibilities makes administration easy. States take care of some issues, the Centre takes care of some issues.

Historically, federalism also helped the integration of Princely States within the Indian Union. With Federalism, you are basically saying that your region will have autonomy with respect to vaious issues and your culture will be preserved. This helped integration a bit easier.

However, it must be noted that India doesn't follow the federalsim of US. India is quasi-federal because the division of power is not balanced. The Centre has jurisdiction over more issues than the states. And the states’ territories at the mercy of centre and there's only one single constitution.
